How it's calculated

  1. For notice in days: last working day = resignation date + number of days − 1, if resignation day is counted as day 1. Else, it's resignation date + number of days. One week equals 7 days.
  2. For notice in months: add months to resignation date (1 October + 1 month = 1 November), subtract one day if resignation day is day 1 (31 October). If the day doesn't exist next month, use the last day first: 31 January + 1 month = 28 February (29 in leap year), so last day is 27 February.
  3. Calendar days: include every day, weekends and holidays.
  4. Buyout ≈ monthly pay ÷ 30 × days you exit early, minus any leave days set off by your employer.

In India, notice periods come from your offer or appointment letter and employer's HR policy. Indian offer letters often state 30 to 90 days. Employers may allow a buyout or early release but aren't required to; get any agreement in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I calculate my last working day?
Start counting notice from your resignation day. With 30 days' notice and counting the resignation day as day 1, if you resign on 1 October 2026, your last working day is Friday, 30 October 2026. If notice starts the day after resignation, it is Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Are 30 days and one month of notice the same?
Not necessarily. A month's notice ends the day before the same date in the next month. If you resign on 15 January 2027 with two months' notice, your last day is 14 March 2027 (59 days), but 60 days' notice ends on 15 March 2027. If the next month is shorter, it ends on the month's last day: one month from 31 January 2027 ends on 27 February 2027.
Do weekends and public holidays count in notice periods?
This calculator counts calendar days, so weekends and public holidays are included. If your contract counts only working days, your last day will be later. Check the notice clause in your contract or appointment letter.
What does notice period buyout mean?
It's when you pay your employer for the notice days you don't work, allowing an early exit; a new employer might pay it for you. This calculator figures a day's pay as monthly pay ÷ 30. If you earn ₹30,000 monthly, leaving 20 days early costs about ₹20,000; if 5 leave days are used, ₹15,000. Your contract will say if basic or gross pay applies.
Can I shorten my notice period by using my leave?
Some employers allow this by setting earned leave against the notice period, while others don't; it's subject to your contract and leave policy. Check with HR in writing before planning.
What is the notice period length in India?
Your notice period is in your offer or appointment letter. In India, this is often 30 to 90 days, with a shorter period during probation. To leave sooner, request an early release in writing or offer a buyout for the remaining days.
