Tips

  • Create a new cover letter for each job. Use the job title exactly as it appears in the ad and spell the company name properly.
  • Highlight the two key skills from the job ad and share where you've used them. A specific example with a result is more effective than a list of traits.
  • Include a line on why this company appeals to you: its products, clients, or methods. It shows you haven’t reused the same letter.
  • Keep it to one page: three or four brief paragraphs. Let the resume hold the details.
  • Direct it to a named person if listed in the ad or on the firm's site. "Dear Hiring Manager" works if not.
  • Read it out loud before sending. Submit as a PDF or in the email, as the ad specifies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a cover letter mean?
A cover letter is a one-page letter sent with your resume that specifies which job you're applying for and why you're a match. It allows you to add personal reasons for wanting the job, which a resume can't convey.
Do freshers need to send a cover letter?
It helps freshers, as it links your studies, projects, and internships to the job. If an advert asks for one, send it.
How long is a cover letter supposed to be?
Keep it under one page, generally 250 to 400 words divided into three or four short paragraphs. Recruiters skim, so each paragraph should focus on one point.
Should you put the cover letter in the email body or attach it?
Follow the advert's instructions. If it says nothing, a brief email with your resume attached works well, and you can attach the cover letter as a PDF too. The job application email template covers the email itself.
What if you don't know the hiring manager's name?
Use "Dear Hiring Manager". It's polite and works everywhere. Don't guess a name or gender.
